A Breakthrough for Treatment-Resistant Depression—Healing in Community.
Spravato® offers a pathway to hope, FDA approved treatment for Major Depressive Disorder Moderate to Severe and Suicidality. At Bridge Psychiatry, we provide this FDA-approved nasal spray treatment within a supportive, medically supervised group environment.
What is Spravato®?
Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray used along with an oral antidepressant for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or suicidal thoughts. Unlike traditional medications like antidepressants that target serotonin or norepinephrine, Spravato® works on the glutamate system to help repair neural connections in brain regions involved in mood.
The Benefits of Our Group Treatment Model
While many clinics offer Spravato in isolated rooms, our practice utilizes a curated group setting. We have found that this model offers unique advantages:
- Shared Experience: Depression is an isolating illness. Healing alongside others who understand the journey can reduce stigma and foster a sense of belonging.
- A Calming Atmosphere: Our group suite is designed for tranquility—featuring comfortable recliners, dim lighting, and a peaceful “sanctuary” vibe.
- Enhanced Safety: You are under the continuous supervision of our medical and psychiatric team throughout the entire two-hour observation period.
- Lower Cost of Care: The group model allows us to offer this intensive treatment more efficiently, often making it more accessible through various insurance plans.

1. The Consultation
We begin with a comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation to ensure Spravato is safe for you. Because we are an integrated practice, we specifically screen for cardiovascular health (blood pressure) and any history of substance use to ensure this is the right clinical fit.
NOTE: You cannot receive Spravato if you have ever had a stroke, AVM or history of emboli. Pregnancy is also a contraindication.
2. The Treatment Session
- Administration: You will self-administer the nasal spray under the guidance of our medical staff. Administration takes approximately 10-15 minutes
- The Observation Period: You will rest in our group suite for two hours. During this time, the medication may cause a temporary “dissociative” effect or a feeling of relaxation, it can also cause nausea (be sure to hold off on snacking at least 2 hours prior to your session).
- Monitoring: We will monitor your depression score each day, your vitals will be checked before, during and after the visit.
3. Integration
As the session concludes, feel free to request brief check-ins with our clinical staff before being picked up by a designated driver.
Frequently Asked Questions about Spravato
Click each to show the answer.
Is Spravato the same as Ketamine?
Spravato (Esketamine) is a specific component of the ketamine molecule. It is FDA-approved specifically for depression and is administered in a certified medical office. This allows for insurance coverage that “off-label” IV ketamine often does not receive.
How often is the treatment?
Typically, treatment consists of two sessions per week for the first four weeks, followed by once-weekly sessions during the “maintenance” phase.
Is it safe for those with a history of Substance Use Disorder?
Because Spravato is a controlled substance, we take extra precautions. However, for many patients in stable recovery, Spravato can be a life-saving tool for the depression that often triggers cravings. Our integrated team will monitor your recovery closely throughout the process.
Can I use marijuana products or other substances with Spravato?
Yes, technically you can use substances during the 2 + months of treatment, however, the efficacy of Spravato has been found to significantly decrease when using marijuana and receiving treatment. You will discuss other substances specifically with your provider-a slip up does not mean being removed from the Spravato program, but it may change the course of the treatment.
Can I drive myself home?
No. You must have a pre-arranged driver to take you home after each session, as the medication can cause drowsiness and impaired coordination for the remainder of the day.
What do I do during treatments?
You can participate in the art/meditation group, or you can journal, listen to music, rest your eyes, have a therapy appointment or create art. We generally recommend that people do not do any movie watching, gaming, and phone calls during the session- this amount of stimulation can become overwhelming and lead to poorer outcomes.
